Week 2

Week 2: UV-vis Fluorescence Lab

We will meet this week complete Lab 1: UV-visible Spectroscopy. This will be a 3-week lab. During this first week it is expected that you will make your standards and QC, measure them, and record your work in your lab notebook. The other two weeks will consist of remaking your standards if necessary, measuring a sample, and processing your data.

Remember to wear safe attire to lab, as we will be working with sulfuric acid:

  • Closed-toe shoes
  • Long pants (covering your ankles)
  • Goggles or chemical-rated safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves

To Do:

  1. Familiarize yourself with the Lab 1 Procedure.
  2. Download the Lab 1 notebook template and have it open and ready to go when you get to lab.
  3. Install Vernier Spectral Analysis on your computer if you do not already have it (free from Vernier).
  4. Attend lab, and remember to bring your computer.

Turn In:

  1. Remember to turn in your Lab 0A and Lab 0B notebooks on Canvas if you have not already done so.
  2. You will also turn in your progress on the Lab 1 notebook this week.

Coming Up:

  • We will continue the UV-vis lab for the following two weeks. There will be class time set aside for you to improve your measurements and process your data.
